MISSION

It’s Not A Box is an interdisciplinary performing arts company dedicated to devised processes and interactive works that invite stories from unheard voices, subvert the relationship between audience and artist, and experiment with what it truly means to play.

MANDATE

We believe all art is both personal and political. There is no such thing as neutrality, neither in the work we as artists create nor in the processes by which we create it, nor in the metrics by which we measure its success. As a socialist company we believe radical work comes from radical artists, perspectives, and practices forged from intersections of shared oppression and lived experiences, and shared visions for the future. It also means that as our entire Artistic Directorship is Queer and half of it is BIPOC we always seek to assemble project teams that reflect that demographic. Beyond representation we seek to facilitate works and spaces that honour accessibility, neurodiversity, gender diversity, class consciousness, and our anti-colonial values. We know there is a lot of injustice and that there are people who do not agree with us.
