pimohtēwak (2019)

A co-production between Joseph Naytowhow, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, It’s Not A Box Theatre, and Production Lighting, pimohtēwak (The Ones Who Walk) was envisioned as a kind of cousin of Overhear and represents our first foray into interactive installation. pimohtēwak invites eight audience members into the wintery grounds of a large outdoor site, splitting them into pairs and equipping them with an app, a map, a blanket, and a backpack of props.

The journeyers experience four different stories, one for each of the sacred directions, all written and recorded by performer, knowledge-keeper, writer, and musician Joseph Naytowhow. Each story lives in a micro-installation and comes with a task, be it finding objects hidden in ice, huddling under a blanket to keep warm, or decorating a tree.

This project was part of Saskatoon’s Wintercity Shake Up and Winterruption 2019, and made possible through the City of Saskatoon WintercityYXE grant and sponsorship of Production Lighting.
